PROVINCETOWN – A young humpback whale was disentangled in Cape Cod Bay near Provincetown on Thursday.

The entanglement was reported by beachgoers at Herring Cove who saw the animal thrashing and rolling at the surface.

Staff from the Center for Coastal Studies’ Marine Animal Response team disentangled the whale, who was found to have had three wraps of line around the base of its flukes.

The center believes that the whale had likely torn the entanglement from a larger fishing gear set.

It’s the third disentanglement of a humpback whale by the MAER team in less than two weeks.

The first was off Wood End in Provincetown on May 14 and the second off Cape Ann on May 18.

Boaters are urged to report any entanglement sightings of marine animals to the Marine Animal Entanglement Response Hotline at 1-800-900-3622.
