HYANNIS – The Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District is proposing new navigational kiosks for downtown and is looking for input from the public on design elements.
The goal of the seven, three-sided kiosks is to enhance the appearance of the streetscape and to guide residents and visitors through the Main Street area.
“It’s about creating a story and telling a story about the downtown,” said Elizabeth Wurfbain, the executive director of the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District.
“What’s happening. What used to happen there. Why it is an important and relevant place,” she said.
The new kiosks will replace several existing kiosks that are over 10 years old and are stylistically outdated and in a state of disrepair.
The project is a first step in a comprehensive initiative that will connect Main Street and promote walkability throughout the entire downtown area.
“It will link people to really take the walk throughout the entire district,” Wurfbain said. “The idea is to bring people along and tie it together as a place.”
The kiosks will include a map of downtown, feature a historic location and provide a directory of local businesses and list upcoming events.
The BID is inviting residents to a public workshop Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Regional Transit Authority Community Room to discuss design elements of the kiosks, including historic and symbol themes, color and possible locations.
“It really is a place making campaign and place making needs to be grassroots,” Wurfbain said. “We are not going to try and create something and tell everyone that downtown should look a certain way. We want it to come from within.”
The new kiosks are possible through generous financial support from the Hyannis Rotary Club.
