Hyannis East End Roadway Improvements Unveiled

HYANNIS-  Officials from the Barnstable Departments of Public Works and the Planning & Development committee met with members of the public Thursday night for a listening session on proposed roadway, streetscape, and intersection improvements in Hyannis’ East End.

“We definitely want to improve pedestrian and bicycle access through the area and we also would like to improve intersections for traffic safety, and traffic flows,” said Town Engineer Paul Graves.

“Of course as part of the projects we are expected to improve aesthetics where we can. So that might include some tree planting and some decorative lighting,” he said.

Areas affected by these proposed changes include Main Street from Center Street to the Yarmouth town line, including the intersections of Main & Center Streets and Main St/Lewis Bay Road, Old Colony Boulevard to South Street, and the intersection of South Street to Ocean Street.

Funding for the project would come from Chapter 90 state allotments aimed at improving roadways, and surrounding areas in the town.

Elizabeth Jenkins, Planning & Development Director for Barnstable

“We are looking at moving forward with preliminary and final design this year. With kind of final design targeted for the spring of ’19, and hopefully construction [for the] fall of 2019,” says Elizabeth Jenkins, Director of Planning and Development for Barnstable.

Work will be done by contractors from the McFarland Johnson Company along with aesthetic enhancements orchestrated by Offshoots Productive Landscape.
