HYANNIS – The Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District recapped the year and discussed the future Wednesday during its annual meeting at EmBargo.
The organization discussed the success of its new Open Streets events in September and October, improving the streetscape and the work that was done to curb the homeless issue.
“Our group with Deb Krau and the police chief worked to open the day center at the NOAH Shelter and also brought community service officers to the street,” said Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District Executive Director Elizabeth Wurfbain. “And also not make it a magnet for people to not move on with their lives and make it more programmatic. And those were pieces we felt proud of.”
Wurfbain also believes having Catholic Social Services take over management of the shelter from Housing Assistance Corporation is a positive for downtown.
“HAC has other things to do such as create housing around the Cape,” she said. “So having this one agency that specializes in this will be a great thing for the community.”
Future plans for Main Street were also discussed including interest from developers to add more housing to downtown.
“That’s really what Main Street needs is more year-round people living here and working and going to the restaurants and shops and using it for those services,” she said.
BID is also starting a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for streetscape upgrades to Main Street. If $15,000 is raised by Christmas a $15,000 donation will be made by MassGov. The funds will be used add more art to main street with murals and more.
The annual meeting also featured the election of officers and awards.
