HYANNIS – The Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District held its annual meeting yesterday at Embargo Restaurant.
The group showcased the changes that were made to the streetscape and programs to help the homeless along with a timeline to move the NOAH Homeless Shelter out of downtown.
“Our stance is that it’s not a Main Street issue and it’s not a Hyannis issue. It’s a Cape Cod issue and it’s a national issue,” said Elizabeth Wurfbain, executive director of the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District. “It is not acceptable to have such a large group of people that are not in a place where they are moving on in their lives.”
Wurfbain said the goal is to have the shelter moved out of downtown within two years of choosing a new location.
The meeting also highlighted what the group would like to accomplish moving forward including up lighting the trees on Main Street.
“I know it sounds simple but in front of Rendezvous on Main Street at night you can see one up lit tree sample and if we up light the trees it would become charming at night,” she said. “I think it would add almost an inviting and safe essence to Main Street at night.”
Wurfbain said the group is also looking to remove obstacles to allow building above store fronts.
