HYANNIS – In an effort to get Cape residents to spend their dollars locally, the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District is hosting their ninth bi-annual Shop Local Day today.

More than 30 businesses on Main Street will be offering sales, discounts and deals for the event.

“Cape Cod is a special place and people come here to visit because it has that old fashioned feel to it and personal feel to it,” said District Executive Director Elizabeth Wurfbain.

Wurfbain added that if people spend money in a locally owned store, it generates up to four times more money for the local economy.

She said that is because locally owned businesses use other local businesses for services, recycling money back into the community.

“They give to your charities. They volunteer on the different organizations,” said Wurfbain. “Cape Cod is a very tight-knit community and we have to sometimes be cognizant of that.”

On average, local businesses give three times the amount to a local community than national businesses, she said.
