BOSTON – A 22-year-old Hyannis man will spend the next 42 months in prison, after pleading guilty to three counts of felony possession of ammunition and firearms.
In November 2015, Justin Moreira unknowingly engaged an undercover federal agent on a “Darknet Market” site, and inquired about purchasing a firearm and silencer.
Darknet Market sites operate outside the parameters of the traditional Internet, allowing individuals anonymity to buy and sell illegal items, such as firearms or drugs.
Paying $2,500 in bitcoins, Moreira ultimately purchased a handgun and silencer, and was arrested by federal agents after retrieving the package at a Hyannis post office.
Following his arrest, Moreira, who has a previous felony conviction in Barnstable County for drug possession, pleaded guilty to the charges levied against him.
