HYANNIS – Local author Casey Sherman will discuss his book “The Finest Hours” and its upcoming Disney feature film release during a fundraiser on Friday to benefit the Hyannis Public Library.

“The Finest Hours,” which was co-authored by Michael Tougias, chronicles a daring coast guard rescue off the coast of Chatham in 1952.

“An Afternoon with Author Casey Sherman” will be held at the Hyannis Yacht Club from noon to 3 p.m. and will include a luncheon, silent auction and raffle.

“They’re looking to generate much needed funds to keep the library going and to offer new programs for the people that really take advantage of the library,” Sherman said.

“The Finest Hours” will be the major topic of discussion and Sherman will share the story with the audience.

“This was a story that was lost to history for 60 years and it’s really imbedded into the fabric of who we are as Cape Codders,” he said. “I want to take people behind the scenes and really show them what the rescue was like from the heroes that actually lived it.”

Sherman will also answer questions and talk about his other written works.

“It’s going to be a really fun day,” he said. “I’m going to share a lot of rare photographs of the actual heroes and have a Q & A session where people can ask me not only about Finest Hours, but about “Boston Strong,” “Search for the Strangler” and many of my other books as well.”

Sherman says the Hyannis Public Library has helped to shape who he is today.

“The first library card I ever took out was at the Hyannis Public Library when I was 8 years old,” he said. “I remember the book I took out. It was about the JFK assassination. So you can imagine at 8 years old I pretty much had my life ahead of me dictated right there.”

“The Finest Hours” film, which had scenes filmed in Chatham, Quincy and Marshfield, is set for a January 29, 2016 release.
