Hyannis Woman Pleads Guilty to Federal Fraud Charges

 

BOSTON – A Cape Cod woman plead guilty to federal charges in U.S. District Court in Boston on Friday.

26 year old Ashley Barrett of Hyannis, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud, she was arrested on March 29 but was out on conditions at the time of Friday’s hearing.

Between September 2013 and January of 2016, Barrett was part of a scheme to defraud elderly victims across the country by falsely representing to them that they had won the lottery and that in order to collect millions in winnings, they had to pay a fee.

The victims were directed to send payment to specific addresses. In July of 2015 Barret deposited a $2,500 check from one of the victims into her personal bank account.

The sentencing date has not been announced by the Justice Department, but Barrett faces as many as 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
