Illegal Fireworks Believed to be Cause of Chatham Brush Fire

fireCHATHAM- The Chatham Fire Department responded to reports of a brush fire at Cockle Cove Beach around 9 p.m. last night.

The Orleans, Harwich, Brewster and Dennis Fire Departments helped render mutual aid to the fire.

According to Chatham Fire Captain Nelson Wirtz, the fire was mostly likely caused by illegal fireworks set off on the beach.

Wirtz says the fire was put out in less than a half an hour with no homes or structures threatened.

Wirtz asks the public to enjoy the holiday weekend without setting off fireworks.

“They’re illegal, don’t do it,” says Wirtz.
