HYANNIS – Catholic Social Services out of the Fall River Diocese will be offering a free immigration session tomorrow.
The session is scheduled for December 17 at 6 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church at 347 South Street in Hyannis in the Lower Church.
There will be additional sessions scheduled in the future for Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Fall River and Taunton.
The session is meant to help immigrants determine whether they qualify for President Obama’s new immigration amnesty program, according to Schuyler Pisha, legal director of Catholic Social Services.
Pisha said that while it is too early to apply for the program, he wants to get the word out about on the application process for the program. It is common, he said, for unscrupulous people to take advantage of immigrants when it comes to applying for federal programs by charging large fees.
Catholic Social Services staff will help people fill out the forms for free, Pisha said, though he advises that people retain a lawyer if possible to help with some of the details.
The Catholic Social Services of Fall River’s Immigration Legal Advocacy and Education Program, known as LEAP, is staffed with lawyers and advocates who can offer advice, Pisha said.
