Independence House Holding Backpack Drive for Clients in Need

HYANNIS – For the sixth straight year Independence House is holding a Backpack Drive for clients in need.

The non-profit organization, which provides programs and services for individuals and families affected by sexual and domestic violence, is collecting school for child and teen students.

Donations will support the clients of the organization’s Child Witness to Violence and teen programs, as well as kids of adult clients.

“We want to make sure that for those children and families that don’t have the financial means to really outfit themselves for the year we want to make sure that we provide that for them,” said Donna Giberti, the director of development and marketing for Independence House.

The organization is accepting new and unused items, including backpacks, totes, lunchboxes, calculators, graphing calculators, watercolor paints, tissues, hand sanitizers, dividers, sticky notes, USB drives, markers, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, blunt tipped scissors, pencil boxes and pouches, three-ring binders, filler paper, book covers, index cards, compasses, dry erase markers, folders, highlighters, erasers, rulers, pens, pencils, crayons, composition notebooks, one-subject notebooks and glue sticks.

“We are really making sure that they have every they need,” Giberti said. “It’s a good couple hundred dollars of supplies that each child gets.”

All donations may be dropped off at the Independence House location at 160 Bassett Lane in Hyannis between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through August 18.

The collections will only be distributed to clients of Independence House.

“We are always welcoming clients if they need our assistance,” Giberti said.
