Yarmouth Indian Memorial Re-dedication Postponed Until the Spring

YARMOUTH – A re-dedication of the Indian Memorial in Yarmouth scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed due to the weather forecast.

The Town of Yarmouth, the Yarmouth Historical Commission, and the Indian Memorial Restoration Committee planned the event at the memorial on Indian Memorial Drive.

Director of Community Services Patricia Armstrong said the event will be postponed until the spring.

The memorial was installed in 1881 by Daniel Wing Jr, a local Yarmouth Quaker and historian who wanted to commemorate the native peoples buried at Long Pond.

The memorial was located on a piece of his property that was formerly part of the Yarmouth Indian Reservation from 1713 to 1779.

By 1918, Wing had donated the cemetery lot to the South Yarmouth Cemetery Association and another adjacent 2 and a half acres of his land to the Town of Yarmouth.

Citizens concerned about the deteriorating stone memorial formed the Indian Memorial Restoration Committee, and in 2017 they were approved by voters to receive funds from the Community Preservation Act to re-set the stone cairn and refurbish the site.
