Input Gathered On Chatham Property Use

CHATHAM – The Eldredge Garage Property Planning Committee convened this past Thursday to gather input on potential long and short term uses of the Chatham site.

Brad Schiff, the committee’s chairman, says they encouraged citizens to attend.  “Who we invited were the abutters as well as the general public to give their ideas for the future uses of the property.”

The Abutters were sent a letter requesting their participation and anyone unable to attend was allowed to email their feedback.

Schiff, who described the location as one of the most beautiful streets in the world, commented that the meeting was not to rate the ideas.  “We weren’t evaluating any ideas at all.  We asked questions just to clarify and make sure we understood.  The purpose of it was to add to our growing list of potential ideas for usage.”

The ideas put forth included using some of the area for open space or parking, retail, and rebuilding the garage to house restrooms.

The committee has been charged with creating a comprehensive recommendation to be presented to the Board of Selectmen.    They previously held an internal brainstorming session which produced the initial list of potential uses.

The property has an estimated value of $2.5 million dollars.  Its acquisition was approved at last year’s January town meeting, followed by the official transfer to Chatham.
