FALMOUTH – Investigators from the State Fire Marshall’s Office are continuing their search for whoever is responsible for two fires set in Falmouth early Sunday morning.
Fires were reported at Fabric Corner on Spring Bars Road and nearby at the Dollar Tree Store in Falmouth Plaza early Monday morning. Investigators immediately began investigating the Dollar Tree fire as arson because damage involved broken glass on the store’s door. On Tuesday, the state fire marshal declared the two fires as arson.
Jennifer Mieth, state Department of Fire Services Public Information Officer, said in a statement this morning about the arson probe that investigators “have systematically ruled out all other possible causes” and that is why they came to the conclusion that the fire at Fabric Corner, in addition to the fire at Dollar Tree, was arson.
But Mieth said she did not want to comment on whether the fire marshal has received any tips about the blaze on the arson hotline that was set up yesterday.
“Fire investigation works on a deductive reasoning process. Once a fire has been determined to be arson, the fire triangle details (heat, fuel, oxygen) are often details they like to keep close to the vest in order to tell when people they are interviewing are telling them the truth or not, until they are able to make an arrest,” she said.
Deputy Fire Chief Tim Smith said the Department is focused on being vigilant for any further fires as investigators concentrate on finding out who set the two on Sunday.
“It’s more in the lap of the Fire Marshall’s Office and the police department because now it’s a law enforcement issue. They keep us apprised as the investigation continues.”
Falmouth and State Police are also taking part in the investigation. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered.
