Stanton Formally Announces Candidacy for State Senate

SANDWICH – Jack Stanton of Sandwich declared his candidacy Monday for the 2020 Democratic nomination for the Plymouth & Barnstable State Senate District.

Stanton, who is a local offshore lobsterman, announced his decision to run on the deck of his lobster boat “Terri-Ann.”

“This is a district of predominately working class people and I think that there’s no one path to rescue elected office and that’s to have elected officials which reflect the communities that they come from,” Stanton said during his announcement.

“As a working person in this district who understands what it’s like to scrape by for a dollar, who understands what it’s like to get out there up early in the morning to try and get by, I think that this district should have an advocate who understands what it’s like to struggle.”

Stanton is seeking the seat on Beacon Hill that is being left by Senator Vinny Demacedo, who will be leaving his post for a position at Bridgewater State University.

“Your elected officials need to move the ball on issues that are impacting their district, even if you know that within that particular issue you’re not going to get something passed right away you have a responsibility to speak out about problems that people in your district are facing,” Stanton said.

“I think with that sense of activist leadership coupled with good services and the ability to bridge across the divide and work with others to pass legislation that will improve people’s lives I think I am a candidate who will fulfill all three of those roles and ensure that the voices of this community are heard loud and clear in the Statehouse.”

Stanton’s campaign looks to focus on issues facing the Upper Cape and South Shore, such as the opioid crisis, affordable housing, and climate change.

Stanton previously ran unsuccessfully last year against Randy Hunt for the Fifth Barnstable District House seat.
