COTUIT – The highly acclaimed rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” is coming to the Cotuit Center for the Arts.
The show’s music, which has enthralled generations, was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice.
Attendees will be electrified by the show’s story, vocals and visual production.
Before it was a play, it was released as a double album in 1970, featuring Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan as Jesus. Musically, it serves up a versatile mix of rock, soul, funk and pop with the occasional foray into Vaudeville and Broadway pomp.
The show is based on the fables of Christ’s last week, largely told from the perspective of Judas. It addresses his concern that Jesus’s growing superstardom will endanger the larger mission. At the same time, Jesus struggles with his role as both leader and martyr.
