HYANNIS – JetBlue will once again run flights from New York to Barnstable Municipal Airport this summer beginning on May 16th.
Assistant Airport Manager Katie Servis said this is the second year in a row the airline has committed earlier than the previous year.
“It’s fantastic news for us, we’re hoping they extend it on the other end as well,” Servis said. “JetBlue never seems to proceed forward until they have solid numbers, and I’m sure they took that into account with their decision this year.”
According to Servis, the major airliner’s decision helps the airport itself, since funding from the Federal Aviation Administration is based on ridership.
Last year’s ridership ran close to 90 percent capacity, and in 2014 over 12,000 individuals flew the route.
Servis said she hopes JetBlue will consider year-round flights to and from Hyannis.
Airport Manager Bud Breault previously said believes that the service is important to the airport and the community.
“It’s now giving us another link to the outside world from Hyannis and us being more of a hub, because here you can fly, particularly on JetBlue, to JFK and you can go anywhere in the world,” said Breault after Jet Blue wrapped up service last September.
