HYANNIS – For the fifth straight year, JetBlue will return to Cape Cod for the summer season.

The airline will provide nonstop service between JFK Airport in New York and Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis beginning Memorial Day weekend.

Barnstable Municipal Airport Manager Bud Breault says residents and visitors enjoy the convenience the service provides.

“Fourty-five minutes and you are in New York City, so how can you beat that when you are trying to compete with the bridge traffic in the summer,” Breault said. “It’s a great way to travel and everybody loves it.”

Flights between New York and Hyannis will run Friday and Monday of Memorial Day Weekend, and then Fridays and Sundays through June 10 before running daily from June 14 through Labor Day Weekend.

“I think it is important just to provide another means of transportation for visitors and our residents to get back and forth to New York, which is a major hub and we can go anywhere in the world from there,” Breault said.

Airport officials believe there is a market on Cape Cod for year-round service between the two destinations.

Breault said it is difficult to try and get airlines in is difficult with pilot shortages and competition from other destinations.

“If we don’t have the numbers than we are not going to get the flights,” he said.

Statistics from JetBlue show capacity between the two locations above 85 percent filled.

“We hope that will induce other airlines to also come in and serve this airport and the local population,” Breault said.

Airport officials continue to attend conferences to pitch Cape Cod to other airlines.

Discussions are also underway to expand Runway 1533 in an effort to draw in new airlines.

“[It] would allow a plane to come in and have a safer arrival and safer departure and perhaps be able to take on bigger loads of fuel to go to further destinations,” Breault said. “We feel strongly that if that occurs than we might be able to get more service.”

The airport also recently welcome Cape Cod Coffee to the terminal with a café adjacent to the JetBlue ticket counter.

“We hope that they do very good business,” Breault said.

Cape Cod Coffee was also awarded a liquor license at their airport location.
