Joanne (Merritt) Fettig

COTUIT – Joanne (Jody) Fettig passed out of this world February 20, 2017. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on September 5, 1935 to the late Harold (Jim) Piper and Arlene (Morse) Piper. She grew up in St. Johnsbury and was a 1953 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy.

She was the beloved wife of James Fettig and they celebrated 45 years together. She lived in Scituate 17 years before moving to Sandwich where she worked for the Sandwich School Department for twenty years, retiring as Executive Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools in 1993. For a number of years she and her husband enjoyed being host parents for exchange students from Sweden, Mexico and Japan. She was a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Scituate Chapter, now affiliated with Sandwich, of which she was a member. Jody served on the Sandwich Community School Executive Council and was also an officer and member of the Board of Directors at Shawme Heights in Sandwich for six years. After she and her husband retired they moved to Cotuit enjoying their beloved mini-dachshunds, Noah, Sam and Sadie. Jody was a lover of books, an avid reader who also enjoyed knitting, cross stitch, crossword puzzles, and having lunch with family and friends. She was an ardent tennis fan and cheered on the Red Sox and Celtics. Later, a grand-dog named Gigi, a tiny Chihuahua, came into her life giving her much laugher and happiness; true love it was. In addition to her best friend, her husband, she is survived by four children: Kevin Merritt of West Barnstable, Michael Merritt and wife Mary of Scituate, Corrie Merritt and partner Kathy Nee of Pembroke, Robin Davidson of Sandwich; and a “special daughter”, Karin Haby of Goteborg, Sweden; sister, Gayle Harte of Michigan; a dear niece Connie Murabito and husband Russ of Derry, NH; nine grandchildren; and a number of cousins.

“I will be happy to take my place here, among Cape Codders, old and new, with the smug satisfaction so typical of the Cape resident that, whether dead or alive, the Cape is the best of all places to be.”

In lieu of flowers, Contributions in her name may be made to the Centerville SPCA, the Cotuit Fire and Rescue or the Cotuit Library.

Visiting hours will be 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, at John-Lawrence Funeral Home with a private burial to follow. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. For online condolences please visit John Lawrence Funeral home at www.ccgfuneralhome.com/locations/marstons-mills.
