John Farrell Joins Harbor Hawks for Kickoff Event

HYANNIS – Just shy of five months until the Cape Cod Baseball League Season gets underway and league fans, officials, and sponsors are already hard at work planning for the future.

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks hosted a Pizza Fest Kick Off event last night at Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis.

The event drew well over 100 of team’s supporters as they continue planning for their massive upcoming field replacement project.

Special guest John Farrell was on hand for the event which featured pizza, beer, desserts, Hawks merchandise, raffles, and giveaways.

“This is the premier amateur league in the United States,” said Farrell, “Players that come here can have such an impact with a good performance here during the summer, not only in their draft status but certainly their baseball journey. So Cape Cod League serves so many people, so well, in so many ways.”

Farrell, a two-time World Series winning former Boston Red Sox Manager, got his start with the Cape League, pitching for the then Hyannis Mets in the 1980’s. Since then, Farrell’s three sons have gone on to play in the league as well.

“My involvement with the Cape Cod Baseball League has not only been from my own playing experience, but my three sons played in Falmouth” explained Farrell, “So as I look back, 35 years ago I pitched here in Hyannis, but there has been a lot of connections along the way.”

During the event, the team announced a new sponsor heading into the 2018 season, Hy-Line Cruises, and discussed progress on securing a new field for their home behind Saint John Paul II High School.

Harbor Hawks President Brad Pfeifer says that the $800,000 project is a major undertaking, “It’s a big number but you know it’s bathrooms, It’s dugouts, a new playing surface. There’s a lot of changes”

The hope remains that with some financial help from the Town of Barnstable and local donors the project could get underway following the 2018 season.
