Kayaker Safe After Coast Guard Search

coast guard helicopterNEW HAVEN, Conn. – A kayaker off the coast of Connecticut is safe after Coast Guard crews from Cape Cod spent part of Sunday searching for him.

Watchstanders at Sector Long Island Sound received reports of an empty kayak near Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven around 12:30 pm.

A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft launched from Air Station Cape Cod shortly thereafter, assisting Coast Guard crews from Station New Haven and local fire and police departments in the search.

At 7:30 pm, the missing kayaker contacted the Coast Guard, saying he was safe and had abandoned the vessel earlier in the day when it began taking on water. He swam to shore safely and without incident.
