Keating Calls for Increased Vigilance After Attempted NYC Attack

WASHINGTON – Congressman Bill Keating says more needs to be done in the wake of Monday’s attempted terrorist attack in New York City.

In a statement, the Bourne Democrat said more vigilance is needed to protect “soft targets,” such as subway, train, and bus stations.

“As we have seen over the course of two years in Europe, rapid transit and surface transportation systems remain primary targets of terrorists,” Keating said. “This incident only serves to underscore the need to remain vigilant at all times—and especially in areas that are considered soft targets.

“I also want to commend the New York first responders on their effective response today. They represent the best of the best,” Keating added.

Keating serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security and is the Ranking Member of Terrorism Subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

“I recently participated in a roundtable with transportation security leaders, including Chief John Bilich, the Chief Security Officer of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.  The discussions with these officials pointed out the need for even greater resources for what unfortunately will be a continuing threat,” Keating said.
