WASHINGTON – Legislation has been introduced by Congressman Bill Keating that would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to determine the proper use of Naloxone, commonly called Narcan, in cases of prescription or illicit drug overdoses, including those caused by heroin or fentanyl.

The move comes as first responders are forced to use higher doses of the anti-overdose drug in response to increasing potency of drugs such as fentanyl.

The bill is called the Naloxone Guidelines Act and is co-sponsored by Republican Keith Rothfus of Pennsylvania.

In response to the increased dosing of Narcan, the Act calls on the Department of Health and Human Services to provide updated recommendations for safe naloxone dosing.
