WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bill Keating, a Democrat from the 9th Massachusetts Congressional District, has introduced a bill to help with the ongoing opioid crisis gripping the country.

The Prescribing Saves Lives Act of 2016 would encourage doctors to co-prescribe naloxone along with opioid prescriptions.

Naloxone is a drug that counteracts the effects of an opioid overdose.

The bipartisan bill was co-sponsored by republican Congressman Keith Rothfus from Pennsylvania.

The bill would require federally qualified health centers, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Indian Health Service to develop their own co-prescribing guidelines tailored to their own needs.

Additionally, the bill would commence a program to grant funding to states to establish co-prescribing guidelines.

“Although we must continue working to eliminate opioid abuse and the heroin epidemic, it is imperative that we provide members of our community in Massachusetts with lifesaving resources that will allow them to seek the treatment they need,” Keating said in a release announcing the bill. “Congressman Rothfus and I are introducing this bipartisan legislation in order to do just that – save lives and avoid fatal overdoses.”
