Congressman Keating Joins Call for Green New Deal

                Congressman Bill Keating

WASHINGTON – 9TH District Congressman Bill Keating has announced he is a cosponsor of the Green New Deal Resolution.

“I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the Green New Deal Resolution led in the House by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and in the Senate by our own Sen. Markey,” he said.

“The time to act on the climate crisis is so long overdue.  Communities like ours, that are predominately coastal, have seen the signs of what is to come if we don’t address this emergency. We know that the climate crisis is not just a national issue but a global challenge that must be addressed.  The Trump Administration, with its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord among many other actions, has made it clear they do not intend to do that,” said Keating.

The resolution calls for sweeping changes to travel, with a goal of eliminating airline travel and dismantling nuclear power plants.

One of the many goals in the sweeping changes it would make in the United States is “meeting 100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources.”

In addition, the proposal sets a goal of rebuilding all buildings in the country to make them more energy efficient.

“That is why I fought hard to have the Subcommittee I will chair on the Foreign Affairs Committee include energy and environment in its jurisdiction.  My role as Chairman of that Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, Energy, and the Environment will be to work with our foreign colleagues and in conjunction with efforts on the national level to reestablish America’s position as a leader on both climate change and renewable energy,” said Keating.
