Keating Meets With EPA Officials in Woods Hole

William Richard Keating

WOODS HOLE – Congressman Bill Keating met with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials in Woods Hole Monday to discuss nitrogen mitigation efforts on Cape Cod.

In the meeting, the Bourne Democrat spoke with EPA Regional Director Alex Dunn about taking a “holistic” approach to dealing with nitrogen related issues in the region.

The meeting came at the federal agency’s Nutrient Innovation Showcase.

“After years of hard work, the completion of the county’s 208 plan has given communities across the Cape a roadmap to ensuring that our bays, estuaries, and marshes remain pristine,” Keating said. “As a Cape resident, I realize the importance of our single source aquafer and our historic coastline because I see the impact that they have on my life every day.”

“I believe that committing to the Cape’s waste and drinking water infrastructure is where our community can come together to ensure we retain our special character and continue to attract many to our region for generations to come,” Keating added.

Keating also expressed concern over the recent PFA chemical contamination issues at Joint Base Cape Cod and in Hyannis.

“As I expressed to Administrator Dunn, for some time I have been concerned about contamination from PFAS chemicals in Hyannis, at Joint Base Cape Cod, and elsewhere in our region. As the Commonwealth officials work to complete an updated state drinking water standard for these chemicals, multiple federal agencies are concurrently working to understand the scope of this contamination, any potential human health implications, and possible solutions. I stand ready to ensure we have a robust response,” Keating said.
