Keating Named to Foreign Affairs European Subcommittee

WASHINGTON – Cape Cod’s congressman has been named the chairman of a foreign affairs subcommittee in the House of Representatives.

Bourne Democrat Bill Keating will head up the Europe, Euasia, Energy and Environmental subcommittee, a board that oversees transatlantic ties with a focus on energy and environmental issues.

“I am very excited to begin my work as Chairman. The traditional alliance between the United States and Europe for the past seventy years has been one of the most influential in the world in terms of promoting security and prosperity. We need to continue our great partnership rather than threaten it as the Trump Administration seems intent on doing. This position will afford me and my colleagues on the Subcommittee the opportunity to examine the strengths of international agreements such as NATO and the Paris climate change agreement. My work as Chairman will also dovetail with my position on the House Armed Services Committee as we continue to strengthen our alliances in Europe while defending against the continuing – and different – threats posed by Russia and China.

“At home, the residents of my district understand how critical it is to preserve our long-standing partnerships with our European allies for the sake of our own economy stability; just ask our cranberry growers.  My work last year to make sure cranberry farmers were not hit with retaliatory tariffs from Europe underscores how important a productive relationship with Europe truly is, and how devastating policies from the Trump Administration can be for everyday Americans when our transatlantic alliance is needlessly attacked. I look forward to doing even more to strengthen the economic ties between our country and European allies, which will only be a net positive for the Commonwealth.

“Further, Southeastern Massachusetts is a hub of new, green energy technology.  As our district looks to continue to be a leader in energy and environmental sustainability, I believe this chairmanship will be critical to that objective through increased collaboration with industry leaders on the European continent.”

Keating was appointed to the House Armed Services Committee last week and was also tapped to serve on the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa, and International Terrorism.
