WASHINGTON – Cape Cod Congressman Bill Keating is calling for a worldwide united effort in response to North Korea’s hydrogen bomb test on Wednesday.

In a statement released yesterday, Keating says increased sanctions on Pyongyang should be on the table, calling the test reckless.

“There is little doubt that North Korea conducted anotehr test of its nuclear weapons capability; however, we cannot confirm whether their claims it was a hydrogen bomb are accurate as of yet,” Keating said. “What we do know is that this reckless activity by an unpredictable leader presents a direct problem to the international problem.”

Keating also asks for cooperation from China and Russia on the matter.

“We have seen overwhelming opposition to the test from North Korea’s neighbors and across the world, including from China and Russia. As we continue to asses North Korea’s claims, it is critical that we remain united on a path forward – including increased sanctions. Further, this is a time for China and Russia to use their leverage with North Korea in assistance of our shared goal.”

The Bourne Democrat is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and is a Ranking Member of the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee.

South Korea said Thursday that it will resume cross-border propaganda broadcasts that Pyongyang considers an act of war. The South’s propaganda broadcasts are meant to raise questions in North Korean minds about the infallibility of the ruling Kim family.

Seoul’s Defense Ministry says it’s also discussing with the United States the deployment of U.S. “strategic assets.”
