Kick-Off Event for Chatham Housing Project to be Held Tonight

habitat for humanity logoCHATHAM – An event tonight will introduce the community to four local families who will move in to their new homes this year, thanks to a little help from Habitat for Humanity.

Four homes off Route 28 near the Cape Cod Commercial Fisherman’s Alliance will have walls raised in August, a process which still requires volunteers to complete.

The land was donated by the Chatham Housing Authority for Habitat to provide assistance for families who Executive Director Vikki Goldsmith said have are at a disadvantage in this economy.

“You have all the laborers, workers and hospitality workers who we all rely on, but the disparity between wages and home prices are so big and its driven by incomes from off-Cape,” Goldsmith said.

Goldsmith highlighted Chatham as a town which embodies the tourist image of what Cape living is like, but also what the year-round reality is when it comes to cost of living.

The over 90,000 square-foot building site already has foundations set and septic systems installed.

On August 13th, the wall-raising will begin. Tonight’s event will recruit volunteers for that process, who will hammer nails, provide snacks and staff registration tables.

The families who will benefit from the build will put in “sweat equity” toward their future homes by assisting in the months-long process.

The event tonight will be held at 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Main Street.

Habitat will hold an additional wall-raising of six homes on Virginia Street in West Yarmouth.
