Late Night Service Grinds to a Stop on MBTA 

BOSTON (AP) — It’s the end of a rather short era at the MBTA.

The transit agency is ending a two-year experiment with late-night weekend service, citing high costs and declining ridership.

The extended hours will be offered for the last time on Saturday morning between 12:30 a.m. and 2 a.m.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has promised to explore other alternatives after being ordered by federal officials to look into how the elimination of late-night service might impact minority and low-income riders.

Uber says it will try to help pick up the slack temporarily. Beginning Sunday morning and for the following three weekends, the ride-hailing service says it will offer a flat $5 rate for shared UberPOOL trips between 12:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. that begin and end along MBTA stations.
