Latham Centers in Brewster More Than Halfway To Fundraising Goal

BREWSTER –  The Latham Centers’ effort to build a new community center has reached a milestone.

Their capital campaign to raise $2.1 million has passed its halfway mark.

The center will be located at a renovated building in Brewster that formally housed the New England Fire and History Museum.

Director of Development Heather Kelsey said the fundraising effort has served another purpose as well.  “Even people who live in Brewster aren’t familiar with what we do.  The campaign has provided additional opportunities to get the word out and share the work that we do.  The response has been really great.”

The non-profit has been serving children and adults with complex special needs since 1970.

Kelsey explains that their residential school campus, located less than one half of a mile away, is in urgent need of expansion.

“Our main campus is at capacity.  We just don’t have the space that we need for physical fitness, some of the vocational training that we do, and other parts of our mission,” she said.

Some features planned for the new location are a technology room, gymnasium, art room and an auditorium.  Other organizations will be welcome to use the space.  The renovations are on track to begin by the end of the year.
