ONSET – Residents and visitors on the Cape who have always wanted to learn how to quahog will have an opportunity later this month.
The Buzzards Bay Coalition and Wareham’s Department of Natural Resources will host a free workshop on Wicket’s Island in Onset Harbor on Monday, May 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Attendees will learn the basics of digging for hard clams, or quahogs, including what tools are needed, how to dig and where to look.
Participants will travel by boat from Onset Pier to Wickets Island for the fun and educational activity for the whole family. The event is part of the Wareham Oyster Festival.
The coalition will provide all necessary equipment, including rakes, peck baskets, gauges and waders, but participants may bring their own.
Attendees with a Wareham shellfishing permit will be allowed to keep the quahogs they catch. The event will be catch-and-release for those without a permit.
Participants can expect to get wet and muddy and should dress accordingly.
