Lecture Series to Celebrate 200th Birthday of Maria Mitchell

NANTUCKET – This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of America’s first woman astronomer, Maria Mitchell, and birthday events will be held by the Maria Mitchell Association to honor her legacy.

The Nantucket organization will host a 200th birthday speaker series throughout the summer.

Journalist, author and broadcaster David Baron will be the featured speaker on Wednesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Nantucket Atheneum. Baron is the author of the book “American Eclipse,” which featured Maria Mitchell. The event is free and open to the public.

Former New York Times science reporter and author of “Longitude,” “Galileo’s Daughter,” “The Planets,” and “A More Perfect Heaven” will speak Wednesday, July 25 at the Nantucket Historical Association’s Whaling Museum at 7 p.m.

J. Drew Lanham will be the lecturer at the Nantucket Atheneum on Wednesday, August 22 at 7 p.m. Lanham is a professor of wildlife at Clemson University and a board member of the National Audubon Society. His research focuses on songbird ecology, along with the African-American role in natural resources conservation. This event is also free and open to the public.
