HYANNIS – The scrimshaw collection of one of the art form’s most prominent collectors – John F. Kenndy – will be the focus of a lecture Thursday evening at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis.
The JFK Scrimshaw Collection will be presented by world renowned scrimshaw expert and senior curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum Dr. Stuart Frank.
Kennedy, a collector of nautical art, surrounded himself with scrimshaw at his Hyannisport home and the oval office.
Scrimshaw is the name given to the engraving and carving of bone or ivory and was a popular way for whalers to pass the time.
The event, which is the last of a series of scrimshaw lectures, will be held at 5 p.m. and the cost is $10, $5 for museum members.
