FALMOUTH – Historians and geographers have struggled with defining the Greater Caribbean for many decades and an upcoming lecture in Falmouth will use the songs of Jimmy Buffett to shape the tourist vision of the region.

The Sea Education Association will host “In Search of Margaritaville: Jimmy Buffett’s Vision of a Greater Caribbean” on Sunday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at the James L. Madden Center Lecture Hall on Woods Hole Road.

The free event, which is open to the public, will show how the stories of tourists have been key to framing the region.

The lecture will be given by Mark Long, the Associate Professor of History and Social Science and Dean of Academic Partnerships for the association.

At SEA, Long teaches Conservation & Management as well as Maritime History and Culture.

His primary research interests are the intersections between maritime, economic and environmental history and policy, mainly focused on frontier and borderland areas.
