Legislature Approves Temporary Budget for July

massachusetts state houseBOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts lawmakers have approved an interim state budget that would pay the state’s bills for one month in the event a final spending plan isn’t ready yet.

The Democratic-controlled Legislature passed the temporary budget on Monday as a six-member House-Senate conference committee continued negotiations on the full $38 billion budget for the fiscal year that starts on July 1.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker had earlier filed a request with lawmakers for an interim budget that would cover only the first two weeks of July. It wasn’t clear if the Legislature’s decision to extend that request to a full month signaled any roadblocks in the negotiations.

Once the final budget is sent to Baker’s desk, he’ll have 10 days to review it and make any line-item vetoes.
