Legislature Postpones Discussion of ‘Millionaire Tax’

State House - 2BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts lawmakers have postponed debate about a proposed constitutional amendment calling for what’s been dubbed the “millionaire tax.”

The House and Senate held a constitutional convention Wednesday but recessed before considering the 4 percent surtax.

It would apply to individuals with annual incomes above $1 million.

Supporters say it would raise money for education and transportation. Critics argue it would hurt the state’s business climate.

The earliest the measure could go before voters is 2018.

Lawmakers rejected two other Republican-backed amendments. One called for requiring a two-thirds vote of the Legislature, rather than a majority vote, to draw money from the state’s “rainy day” fund. The other sought to take redistricting powers from the Legislature and giving them to an independent commission.

The next joint session is scheduled for April 6.
