Leibowitz Kicks-Off Campaign for State Rep Seat

BREWSTER – Another candidate has jumped into the race for the House of Representatives from the 1st Barnstable District.

Steve Leibowitz has announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination for the seat representing areas of Barnstable, Brewster, Dennis, and Yarmouth.

Leibowitz, a Brewster democrat and former school committee member, has filed campaign paperwork with the state’s Office of Campaign and Political Finance and hosted an official campaign kickoff on Friday to get the word out.

“In terms of elected politics when I was a student at UMass, I got elected to town meeting there, then when I moved back home to Brookline I got elected to town meeting there.” Leibowitz explained of his political experience.

“Here on the Cape, I’ve been a member of the Brewster school committee, been on the housing partnership, served as head of the Brewster Democratic Town Committee, and I now serve on the Democratic State Committee.”

The race is already crowded with incumbent Brewster Republican Tim Whalen seeking a third term, and Democratic challenger Joshua Mason, a Dennis Democrat also vying for the job.

While he isn’t yet ready to discuss what differentiates him from the other democrat in the race, Leibowitz does have a strategy for taking on his opponents in the campaign.

“I’m trying to get at it from a values base,” he said.

“That we’re at our best when we look out and care for each other in our communities, for each other and the environment, so it really comes from a value-based start of things and then talking about the issues that.”

Leibowitz has spent his career in higher education, serving in a variety of positions – from administrative roles to training and instructional design in Information Technology

A $15 minimum wage, paid family medical leave, strengthened gun regulations, and single payer health insurance are among the key issues Leibowitz says he plans to fight for.
