LGBT Caregiver Support Group to Start at Barnstable Senior Center

KA_Hyannis_barnstable senior center_111315HYANNIS – The Barnstable Senior Center is starting a support group for LGBT caregivers this month.

The group will provide a place of support for those in the LGBT community who are caring for loved one that is affected by Alzheimer’s or other related illnesses.

Donna Burns, the assistant director for Barnstable Senior Services, said being an elder member of the LGBT community can be a tough thing.

“They don’t expect to necessarily be welcome in a mainstream program and we really feel strongly that we want to change that,” she said. “The Barnstable Senior Center is certainly a welcoming, safe and inclusive place for all members of the Cape community including our LGBT older adults.”

The support group will meet from 3 to 4:40 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of every month and will be facilitated by Alan Johnson, a licensed social worker from HopeHealth.

“He has a lot of experience running LGBT caregiver support groups,” Burns said.

The senior center will also provide services that will make it easier for individuals to attend.

“Folks can actually bring their loved one with them and we will provide care and activities for them while they take part in the benefits of being part of a support group,” Burns said.

There is no charge to attend the support group and anyone with questions regarding the program is asked to contact Burns at 508-862-4753.

The Barnstable Senior Center received funding for the group through the Massachusettts Association of Councils on Aging.
