BOSTON (AP) — Libertarian vice presidential candidate Bill Weld is downplaying criticism of running mate Gary Johnson after Johnson was initially stumped on a question about Syria’s civil war.

During an interview Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Johnson was asked what he would do about Aleppo. Johnson initially said “What is Aleppo?” then offered an answer when reminded it’s Syria’s largest city.

Weld, speaking at Emerson College in Boston Thursday, brushed aside criticism, saying the two have been talking about Syria on the campaign trail.

He said “in terms of Gary forgetting the word, I don’t know. I think that can happen to anybody.”

The former Republican Massachusetts governor said he remains hopeful Johnson will be allowed on the debate stage alongside Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

  1. It can and does happen to anyone and everyone. I work at two universities and spend a fair amount of time giving presentations and lectures. I know my material inside and out, but I can and do have periodic pauses or blanks when I struggle to find the right word or to come up with an answer to a spontaneous question from a student. Does this make me unfit to teach? Or does this make me a normal human being?

I appreciate the way Governor Johnson addressed the issue. Instead of trying to play the blame game, he showed humility and owned it. This is a sign of leadership, not of weakness or failure. I’m more concerns about the clowns who continually wreak havoc and fail to acknowledge any mistakes or wrongdoing than I am with an honest man making an honest mistake.

  2. I totally agree!!! I do the same thing!
