BOSTON (AP) — Libertarian vice presidential candidate Bill Weld is planning to speak to students at Emerson College in Boston as he and running mate Gary Johnson try to win the backing they need to secure a spot in upcoming televised debates.
The former Republican Massachusetts governor will speak to students at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Johnson and Weld describe themselves as fiscally conservative, but say they appeal to young voters because of their views on social issues like same-sex marriage, abortion rights, gun rights and legalizing drugs like marijuana.
The pair needs to receive 15 percent of the vote in public opinion polls to guarantee them a spot at the debates alongside Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Weld served as governor in the 1990s.
