Lifeguards Recognized by Barnstable Officials

HYANNIS – The Barnstable Town Council and Town Manager Mark Ells recognized several local lifeguards at the start of their regular meeting earlier this month.

Ethan Sirhal, Colleen Ellis, Luka Powers, and Halle Rudman rushed into action on July 3rd to save a 17 year-old Hyannis girl who nearly drowned at Covell’s Beach in Centerville.

The lifeguards pulled the victim out of the water from about 10 to 15 feet offshore and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

The victim who had no pulse when pulled from the water was breathing on her own when the ambulance arrived on scene and transported her to Cape Cod Hospital.

A according to Ells, the lifeguards were aided by a man who identified himself as a physician’s assistant applied chest compressions on the girl while Sirhal, administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

“The physician’s assistant replied later that Ethan’s knowledge and action of putting the young lady in the recovery position is what saved her life,” said Ells.

“And he had no knowledge himself of this need.”
