Lighthouse Chamber Players Gear Up for 22nd Season

PROVINCETOWN – The Lighthouse Chamber Players are tuning up for their 22^nd season playing chamber music on Cape Cod.

The group began in the 1990s when members played a benefit concert for Nauset Lighthouse, according to violinist and Artistic Director Elizabeth Chang.

She said their goal is to bring classical music to new audiences. Chang, and many of her colleagues, already teach this style of music.

“We’re very much in touch with people who are already deeply involved with music,” she said.  “But there are a whole bunch of young people who have never been exposed [to classical music].”

As a result, the chamber music group has decided to implement a payment philosophy of “pay what you wish” for this year’s concerts.

Chang said she hopes this will encourage those who have “even remotely heard” of classical music to come by and not be intimidated.

The group also focuses on presenting different versions of famous works, as well as more obscure composers.

A family concert, featuring younger musicians playing pieces for children, will take place Saturday, July 16^th at 7 p.m. at Wellfleet Public Library.

They’ll play again on Sunday, July 17^th at 5 p.m. inside the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House in Provincetown. There, they’ll play works by Robert Fuchs, Sibelius and Mendelssohn.

On Wednesday, July 20^th at 7:30 p.m., the group will play the First Congregational Church in Wellfleet featuring Mozart, Dvorak and Brahms.

Works by Boccherini, Mozart and a rarely-heard piece by Chausson will be played on Thursday, September 1^st at 7:30 p.m. inside the First Congregational Church of Wellfleet. That show will also feature a 7 p.m. pre-concert talk by Amherst College Professor of Music David Schneider.
