Local Airports Receive Over $12.6M in Federal Grant Funding

WASHINGTON, DC – A handful of local airports have received federal grant funding from the Department of Transportation.

Facilities within the Massachusetts 9^th Congressional District to receive more than $12.6 million including Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Provincetown, Plymouth and New Bedford Airports.

“Our local airports are critical to the economic success of our district, and on the Islands, for residents to be able to travel safely and quickly,” said 9^th Congressional District Congressman William Keating. “The amount of funds awarded to our district is a major win for our airports and all of our surrounding communities.”

The majority of the funding, $10.2 million, will go to Martha’s Vineyard Airport for the reconstruction of over 5,500 feet of runway.

Nantucket Airport received two grants. One for $382,500 will be used to install an emergency generator for a runway lighting system. The second, for $675,000, will be used to conduct an environmental study of the impacts of proposed projects identified on the airport’s five-year capital improvement plan.

The Provincetown Airport received $100,000 to purchase a carrier vehicle with a plow attachment for use during inclement weather.

New Bedford airport received $235,000 to improve runway grading and $765,000 to purchase an aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle.

Plymouth Airport also received funding for two projects. The airport will use $92,700 to conduct a wildlife hazard assessment and $81,000 for environmental mitigation due to a runway extension project.
