HYANNIS- The sounds of hammers, saws, and drills could be heard echoing throughout Cape Cod Community College’s campus in West Barnstable last week.
While the construction wasn’t related to the college’s planned Science/Engineering Technology Center, it was thanks to more than ten students who came to campus to learn “Construction Exploration” as part of the college’s Summer of Science programming.
“The Summer of Science is for kids in grades 6-9. Every week we are going over different topics in science and exploration,” says Patrick Stone, College Spokesperson.
Students in the program worked to build their own personal tool box, joined together in teams to create unique, wooden structures, and thanks to support from local businesses, students collaborated to build a temporary home ramp for a patient from Cape Cod Hospital.
“One of the best parts about of Summer of Science is we are introducing students as young as 6th graders to the value of Cape Cod Community College [and community togetherness]… They are coming in and… are being educated in our space… [by] hearing from industry professionals,” says Stone.
Programming will continue this week with an Advanced EMT Exploration program for students entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades.
“From an actual practical training standpoint, they are gaining a better understanding of the sciences and how things work,” added Stone.
Each student will receive emergency medical education from experts in the field and will finish the program with CPR certification.
