Local Communities Receive State Park & Recreation Grant Funding

BOSTON – Three local communities will receive state grant funding for park and recreation improvements.

Provincetown and Yarmouth were each awarded $400,000 and Aquinnah was given over $70,000 through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities grant program.

A total of $6.4 million was awarded to 19 municipalities.

The grant program funds are used to help communities develop new parks, renovate existing parks, and acquire land for park and outdoor recreation purposes.

In Yarmouth, the funding will go towards the Mill Creek Park project. The town seeks to acquire a 1.35 acre parcel of land that currently houses a dilapidated hotel. The building would be removed after the land purchase to enable the site to be connected to two adjacent parks with a waterfront vista.

Grant funding awarded to Provincetown will be used for a Hall Waterfront Park and beach acquisition project. The project will include acquiring 0.3 acres of land with 110 feet of beach frontage on Provincetown Harbor.

The Overlook Park project in Aquinnah will include improving pathways, reducing impervious surfaces by removing hardpan and asphalt, restoring natural grades, adding a boardwalk and viewing platform, and adding a handrail along steep portions of the path.

“Investing in these important park projects will make our parks safer, increase recreational opportunities, and improve access for people of all abilities,” said Governor Charlie Baker.

“Our Administration is proud to help communities acquire new parkland to provide their residents with beautiful places to enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family.”
