HARWICH – Members of the Cape Cod Fisherman’s Alliance distributed locally-caught mackerel to clients of the Family Pantry in Harwich Thursday night.
The effort was part of the ongoing Fish for Families collaboration between the Alliance and the Family Pantry of Cape Cod.
The Alliance had two coolers full of mackerel to hand out to the public last night, and have 2,300 pounds total, to distribute to other pantries across the Cape.
Over 30 fishermen have participated in the Fish for Families program so far.
Chatham Fisherman Willie Ligenza said he was proud to be a part of the program.
“It means everything, it’s my freedom to be able to provide fish to people,” said Ligenza. “It’s what I do. It’s why I do, what I do.”
Since the collaboration’s inception three years ago, more than 57,000 seafood meals have been provided to people on the Cape suffering from food insecurity.
Mackerel is one of five different fish that the Fish for Families program is making available to the Family Pantry and other Cape Cod Hunger Network pantries across the Cape this year.
The program is funded by grants from the Cape and Islands United Way, Cape Cod Foundation, Cape Cod Healthcare and Citizens Bank Foundation.
