HYANNIS – It’s Small Business Saturday and local merchants on the Cape are looking to take advantage of the day.
American Express is teaming up with the National Federation of Independent Business to promote Small Business Saturday’s national campaign.
“Having a big national day to recognize that we can balance out the Black Friday and Cyber Monday, have people slow down and go to the main streets and at places where they know their neighbors shop, is I think, really important,” said Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District Executive Director Elizabeth Wurfbain.
About 95 million people across the country participated in the event last year and spent over $16 million.
The event falls on the day after Black Friday, in an effort to continue holiday shopping through the weekend.
“About 60 percent more goes back into the community when you shop at a locally-owned store rather than at a chain store, and they live near-by, the owners live near-by, so they care what happens in the community,” said Wurfbain.
