Debate Continues about Potential Bourne Dog Park

BOURNE – A possible dog park for Pocasset is entering the final stages of planning and approval.

A feasibility study on the park and a conceptual sketch plan were presented to Bourne selectmen for review recenty.

The potential park would include two sides for small and large dogs, several benches, and would use existing utilities.

The plan calls for the park to be installed on the land behind the Pocasset Fire Station on Barlows Landing Road.

The area is currently home to a baseball field and two basketball courts. One would have to be removed to facilitate the space needed for the dog park that would share the space.

However, opinions were split on the feasibility of the dog park being added to the already developed area.

“You don’t remove something unless you have another place to put it,” said Selectman Peter Meier referring to the removal one of the courts.

“A dog park is needed, but this just isn’t the best place for it.”

The two courts were dedicated in memory to David Duca, a Bourne resident and high school student who died in a car crash in 1994.

Assistant Town Planner Jen Copeland said the dog park plan would call for the resurfacing of the one court and the removal of the other, with a memorial stone honoring Duca to be installed by the remaining court.

Sue Baracchini of Pocasset also disagreed with the installation of the park, saying there was little to no space left for it.

“The area is really well utilized throughout the community,” said Baracchini.

Baracchini said that with all the existing activities like baseball tournaments and pickle-ball, the current parking area would be unable to cope with the added traffic for the dog park.

“Really if you just walk the property you’ll see that the dimensions are not there for the size park that you would need for small dogs, little dogs, parking, water, whatever else you want to put in there,” said Baracchini.
